"Connect Globally, Act Locally"
Welcome to the LGBT Support Group!
Being a social worker / social work student can be an exciting, rewarding, frustrating, isolating experience. Sometimes we work together in groups, and there are other times when we are the only one to bring the social work perspective into a workplace, classroom, team or field. When we add other pieces of our identity on top of our profession, the experience and the perspective becomes even more unique, which can make our work more exciting, rewarding, frustrating and isolating.
Given that so much of social work is what we bring of ourselves, it is important to tend to our own needs and do our own work. Sometimes this means going for a run, watching a movie, or connecting with others.
This group is intended to address that last one--to connect to others (and maybe the others if we get creative!). This is a place where lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, agender, intersex, asexual, pansexual, (am I missing anyone?) identified social workers and social work students can connect, support one another, reach out, provide support, lend an ear, and share resources and experiences.
The official launch date for this group is May 10 and we look forward to hearing from you then! Feel free to leave comments and start connecting before then.

Comment by Rachel West on September 15, 2012 at 6:42pm Bright Idea: Making a Run Plan Can Help Keep Youth Safe
This article discussed creating a run plan with GLBT homeless youth. Sounds like a similar process to creating a safety plan with a DV client.

Comment by Rachel West on June 11, 2012 at 9:46pm The Drive To Thrivehis is a link to a program run by an agency, Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, that I worked for. Drive to Thrive is a program aimed at LGBTQ people living in Suffolk County, NY who are experiencing domestic violence. Please take the time to learn more, and if your agency or practice is based in Suffolk County please add this to you referral database.
